Mirketa’s choice:
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
Plot:
In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet up once a week to investigate unsolved murders. But when a brutal killing takes place on their very doorstep, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case.
Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing eighty but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. Can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer before it's too late?
“This book turned out to be a perfect summer read for me. It’s warm and funny with smart, witty, and lovable characters. Using their age and backgrounds to their advantage, these characters play against stereotypes to solve the crime. Filled with wit, humor, and charm, I hope I get to see this murder- solving crew again soon!”

My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
Plot:
Beginning in the 1950s in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples, Elena Ferrante’s four-volume story spans almost sixty years, as its main characters, the fiery and unforgettable Lila and the bookish narrator, Elena, become women, wives, mothers, and leaders, all the while maintaining a complex and at times conflicted friendship. This first novel in the series follows Lila and Elena from their fateful meeting as ten-year-olds through their school years and adolescence.
“I was completely absorbed by this book. The story is simple but richly narrated. The storytelling is so vivid that it makes you feel like you are living in Naples of the 1950s.This is a novel about friendship, emotional exploration and maturation that you somehow can relate. I definitely recommend it”

Eli’s Choice:
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Plot:
The novel follows Monique, a journalist struggling to make a name for herself, after receiving an offer to interview the mysterious and reclusive 1960s Hollywood starlet Evelyn Hugo. Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love.
“If you’re looking for a book to take on holiday this summer, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has all the glamour to make it a perfect beach read. I loved Evelyn’s story and at the same time I got heartbroken. The ending made me cry so much (well that’s not that difficult when it comes to me). It deals with themes as love, vanity, cinema and expectations of women over the years. Everything about it was complicated and nuanced’’

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert
Plot:
Zaf is a former rugby player turned security guard whose weakness is reading romance and who has a passion for destigmatizing mental illness. Dani is more tightly wound—a Ph.D. student who can barely stop working long enough to eat a decent meal. She certainly doesn’t have time for romance. After a fire drill goes haywire, Zaf’s gallant rescuing of Dani becomes a viral sensation and both realize they can use the situation to their mutual benefit. Dani can get her friends with benefits scenario with hunky Zaf, and Zaf can get closer to his crush, Dani, while using the exposure to help his sports nonprofit for children, Tackle It. What seems like a win-win scenario quickly becomes messier; in romance, fake dating rarely stays fake for long…
“I am not really into romance books but this one was an enjoyable one. It is a very cute story that is great for a comfort read during your summer vacation. I really dig the dynamic of the cynical, anti-romance female character paired with the sentimental, romance-loving male character. It was funny, sexy and made me smile in many parts!
