I don’t know about you, but I’m sure ready to start eating a little bit lighter and brighter. And what’s better than a healthy smoothie to add some color in my diet? And of course, “healthy” doesn’t have to mean bland and boring…quite the opposite! Even though smoothies are chock full of nutrients, they don’t have to be boring. Full of colorful frozen fruits and veggies, unexpected herbs and spices and creamy add-ins like yogurt and banana make the dreamiest sips ever. They're a great way to make use of leftover fresh fruit or to sneak in some extra superfoods that you wouldn't normally eat on their own.

1. Mirketa’s spirulina smoothie

Ingredients:
-Frozen banana
-Frozen blueberries
-1 date
-Spinach (preferably baby spinach)
-Oat milk (or your favourite plant-based milk)
-Molasses

You can also find the recipe on Mirketa’s TikTok account: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZML1UwAVt/

Health fact: Did you know that spirulina is believed to be one of the oldest life forms on Earth. It was first used by the Aztecs as an endurance-booster and it is considered a superfood! The Aztecs also used spirulina to treat various diseases, and legends say that the kingdom’s messengers used the algae to sustain their marathon runs. Spirulina is a good source of: vitamin B1, B2 and B3, copper, iron and magnesium. Modern research supports its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well as its effect on lowering blood cholesterol levels.

2. Breakfast Oatmeal smoothie

Did you ever wonder if you can sip your favorite breakfast oatmeal from a jar? Oh yes, now you can!

Ingredients:
-Oats. (A seriously underrated smoothie ingredient! Oatmeal is rich in fiber, and it makes smoothies satisfyingly thick and ultra filling)
-Frozen banana
-Peanut Butter (the healthy fat and protein you need!)
-Maple syrup (or honey)
-Almond milk (or your favourite plant-based milk)
-Cinnamon (+ Vanilla extract)

3. Tropical Bliss Smoothie (AKA my favorite!)
I am not the easiest person when it comes to fruits and I absolutely hate bananas ( I can spot in a second if something has banana in it). But this smoothie is a keeper for me!

Ingredients:
-Frozen mango and pineapple
-Frozen blueberries
-Coconut milk
-Chia seeds
-Kale (the infamous superstar)
-Honey
(Ι also like adding peanut butter sometimes)

The instructions are simple: Throw all the ingredients in the blender, blend and serve!

Health fact: Did you know that chia seeds have been used for hundreds of years? They’ve actually been a staple in Native American and Mexican diets for hundreds of years. They were used to make breads, porridges, and for medicinal uses. To name a few of their incredible nutrient sources, chia seeds provide omega-3 fatty acids, protein, fiber, antioxidants, and essential minerals! They contain health benefits such as promoting GI health and reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Bon appétit!
